Australian "Hedgehog"-Spiny Anteater
On some rocky highland places in Australia, there lives a kind of small rare animal with needles on the whole body. Its mouth is long and pointed, looks not beautiful. This animal is called "spiny anteater". It is a special local animal in Australia. It is small in size. But it has a magic skill for protecting itself. It has a special long nose, a long tongue and sharp claws for finding foods. Spiny anteaters' favorite food is ants and white ants, so it uses its long nose for searching for ants. The spiny anteater is short-eyed, so its eyes have just an assistant function. When a spiny anteater finds an anthill, it will use its sharp claw to destroy it, so ants will come out of their home. That is just what the anteater expected. It will put out its long tongue and stick ants one by one into its mouth. It has an almost 1-foot-long tongue with mucus all over it. So no ant can escape from its long tongue. The spiny anteater can eat up thousands of ants and white ants at one go.
Surviving in an animal kingdom is not an easy thing. Every animal has its unique protection and arms. That are the magic weapons for staying alive. Spiny anteater's arms and protection ability are very special. When it meets an enemy, it will straighten up its sharp needles on the body to bulldoze them. If the enemies are some inexperienced and cowardly animals, this proves really effective. The spiny anteater has another protection facility which is a poisonous source at its back foot. It will use the poison to attack its enemy. By the way, it has another passive way for protecting itself. It will huddle up its body, hide its head and stomach inside, reveal its needles outside, like a hedgehog. So you will stay away from it.
Spiny anteaters like living in hills covered with forest, or sand plains, or rocky areas. They love the lonely life and doing things independently. Only when the autumn comes, they would like to be together and find their love partners. If they happen to meet the partner they like, they will live together. After a short honeymoon, they will say goodbye to their lover, going on living their lonely life.
The spiny anteater is a kind of mammal animal, but it lays eggs, though not as productive as for instance hens. It has only one time for laying eggs. The most interesting thing about its hatch is that the anteater uses its mouth to send the egg to a tentative hatch bag made of its skin. After about 28 days, the baby will come out.
The spiny anteater lives in Australia, a rare animal. It has much value for science. Every animal on the earth has its right and privilege to live, so for us human beings it is our duty to protect these lovely animals-our longtime friends. |
