The DaLian Forest Zoo was moved from the downtown center into the top south part of Dalian city-a scenic place named white cloud mountain landscape on October 15, 1995 with hills at the back and the sea in the front. It covers an area of 7.2 square kilometers; the planning area is 80 hectare. More than 150 species and more than 200 animals in numbers are shown here. The zoo formally opened to the public on May 24, 1997.
The animal showing can be divided into several zones, such as functional zone, grazer zone, lion & tiger hill, primate zone, bear hill, Asian elephant zone, comprehensive nature protection zone, all of which are connected by three overpass bridges straight into the north and the south. |
Sitting in the 1-kilometer-long elevated sightseeing car, you can overlook the whole view of the 20-hectare-sized a park within a park, you can also see a falling music square with a decoration of 12 earthly branches, a laminated waterfall, YanShui lake, Birds heaven, peacock garden, apricot flower garden, silver river square, etc.
This elevated sightseeing car takes you to an elevation of 259.6 meters, from which you can enjoy the full view of the zoo and also the whole Dalian city. Some services are available in the zoo, such as the barrier-free pass, special cars for babies and disabled people, public phone booths, restaurants, entertainment facilities for children, etc. all of which provide much convenience for the tourists.

The history of Dalian Forest Zoo
Dalian government changed the name "small village park" used during anti-Japanese period (the former name was "electric park") into "Dalian Cultural Park" in November, 1945.
The name of the "Cultural Park" was changed into " LuXun Park" at the early of 1947.
The first bronze statue of Mr. LuXun in China was established in Dalian LuXun park on October 19, 1948.
The bear hill was established in 1957.
The elephant from Beijing Zoo was given the first show in LuXun park in May, 1964.
The bronze statue of Mr. LuXun was moved to Dalian NanShan Park in September, 1966, and the name of "LuXun Park" was formally changed into " Dalian Zoo" at the same time.
The separate 15 rooms for peacocks, jackals, wolves and other omnivorous animals were established in 1968.
The panda room, the northeastern tiger cage and the lion room were established in 1971.
The northeastern tiger gave her first successful breeding of one cute baby in China in 1972, and a big cage for waterfowls was also set up in 1972.
The seal room was established in 1973.
The monkey rooms and the monkey cage were built in 1974.
Some cages for the grazer animals, such as zebras, deer, camels, etc., were set up in 1975.
The emu room was built in 1976.
Some cages and rooms for waders, boa and birds were set up in 1977.
The move of DaLian zoo was listed as one of the top 18 important civic events by the municipal government in 1995, and it started on October 15, 1995, accompanied by a big celebration.
From May 12, 1995 to May 24, 1997, under the caring of the municipal government, the instruction of the leaders of the city construction bureau and with more than 3000 workmen's day-night work, a complete new forest zoo was finally finished at the most scenic white cloud mountain spot at the top south part of the city
Dalian Forest Zoo was formally opened to the public on May 24, 1997, and a ceremonious celebration was held.
