The Second Project

An African grazing land has been built in Dalian Forest Zoo to provide wild feeling for the animals and get the visitors' appreciation. This is the second project plan in the Dalian Forest Zoo. In order to achieve a natural feeling, the municipal government decided to import some rare animals from Africa at the time of the second project's foundation.
Clearing all the formalities, seeking buying places, capturing animals, quarantining animals, shipping the animals to Dalian by air, all these tasks should be done in two years, but they were in fact finished after half a year by the Dalian Forest Zoo staff. In order to welcome the African guests' animal houses were built according to the animals' characters and habits. The houses for 5-meter high giraffe, 2.5-meter high antelope animals, snakes and birds have no heating plant. The room channels, departed rooms, watering places, breeding rooms and observing rooms were built according to the animals' different body form, so it is not surprising that the African quarantine officers were satisfied with them when they saw them. They praised Dalian's circumstances and that the animal houses' conditions were good. They will be at ease when these animals are in Dalian.
When you see these animals, you will associate them with African wildness and life's rarity from their smooth fur, alert eyes, strong body and agitate manners. Look, beautiful giraffes raising their heads just like swanking - they are the tallest animals in the world. Giraffes like to eat the leaves of espino or sensitive plant and live alone or in small groups on the shrub wood's plain or a plain with few trees. Giraffes' run-speed can reach 50 meters. Most of springboks, gemsbok, black face takin,live in the African desert and are seldom seen in China; they can bear high temperature without drinking water even though their body temperature increases significantly for their special body structure. The now rare white rhinoceros spreads in the middle and south Africa, its body is bigger than the black rhinoceros' it has only one horn, the thickness of its skin is from 2cm to 3cm. White rhinoceroses like to eat grass. Now white rhinoceros has become a rarity because they often are killed to obtain their horn. White rhinoceros' gestation is 547 days on average, delivering one time every three years and only one baby at each time. At present, there are a male rhinoceros and two female rhinoceroses in Dalian.
Animals shipping from Africa by air are 24 springboks, 24 black spot takins, 38 white faces takins , 33 gemsbok,24 giraffes and 3 white rhinoceroses. In addition, there were 40 ostriches in the African animal zone and 10 crown cranes, 10 black neck swans and more than 120 flamingos shipped from the US and Holland. At the end of August, 5 alpacas, 10 kangaroos, 6 white tigers and 4 zebras will be shipped from foreign countries to Dalian Forest Zoo. |
