National treasure - panda is on the verge of death

In the zoo, visitors find pandas to be the most enjoyable animals and on the stage, pandas' excellent performances have won hearty rounds of applause. But now, the number of pandas remaining in our country is only 1100, panda's survival is menaced and is near to extinction.
Why the lovely pandas have gotten into such misery? In fact, 1 million years ago, panda's breeding was very prosperous, they were found in Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei, Fujian, Jiangxi, Zejiang, Shanxi, Shanxi, Hebei and so on. At that time, there were large tracts of bamboo in south of China, panda's food was sufficient, so they could live easily, but with the time passing, panda's spreading got smaller and smaller, only limited to Daliangshan of Sichuan, Daxingling, Xiaoxingling, GongXiashan, Mian mountain between Chuan and Ganyou border and the south slope of Qingling in Shanxi, only six small tracts left and they are not connected to each other. The spreading area is about 29500 square kilometers and perching area is about 5900 square kilometers. According to investigation, from the mid-sixties to the eighties the arrow bamboo came into flowers and thus limited panda's spreading. For example, in Sichuan, panda's perching places decreased from 36 counties to 28; in Mianshan of Gansu, they declined from three counties' 15 villages to only one county's nine villages.
Panda can breed less babies, only one or two babies one time, that is one of the reason leading to panda's decrease. The baby panda is very weak and is only 1/1000 the weight of adult pandas. The death rate of babies is 30-50% and in a place where panda's numbers are limited, they have to marry in close relative, leading them to degeneration.
The above reasons will all affect panda's developing in population. In the mid-seventies, according to field investigating, there was only one panda on average left in every ten square kilometers, so pandas were about to become extinct. In order to protest for pandas and make them survive continuously, from 1963 to 1983, we had built 12 natural preservation areas in our country, among them, six are concentrated in Mianshan area, because the number of pandas is more there.
Panda is a special species in our country and is famous among rare animals in the world. They are a national treasure of China. From 1953, we have presented 24 pandas to England, France, the Soviet Union, Japan and so on. Pandas are considered rare animals for showing by every country. |

But we are sorry that many panda's perching places were occupied by human beings. People in preservation areas or around them have less legal consciousness, they often make some pitfalls in preservation areas, many pandas are killed unconsciously, this made it more difficult for them to survive. If it is just going on like this, panda will disappear from the field in a not very long time. Our later generation only can see specimen of panda's bone and faded fur in the museum.
